Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, on Friday,
said the state needed a leader with equitable sense
of justice to sustain the present development.
He said this during the presentation of a cheque of
N20 million to the Anglican Bishop of Mbamili, Most
Rev. Dr. Henry Okeke to pay off the N13 million loan
taken by Anambra West farmers from the First
Bank, which they defaulted in paying due to the
2012 flood.
The remaining N7 million was given as loan to the
farmers for 2014 farming season at no interest at
all.
Governor Obi said that even though most
commissioners and those that took decision always
wanted to site all available projects in his home
town, he always refrained them from doing so,
maintaining that projects should be sited according
to need.
He gave example with the 10 maternities the state
was building in remote parts, saying that they sited
one in his town
of Agulu, but he had to direct that it should be taken
to rural areas.
“I am from Agulu. Besides Agulu having a general
hospital, one can access Awka from any part of the
town in less than 20 minutes. But there are some
towns in the state that do not have any health
facility and cannot access Awka easily. These are
the type of towns that need those health facilities”,
Obi
said.
On the cheque of N20
million presented to the
Bishop, he explained that
it was part of the faith
based loan his
Government was
extending to the people of
the state.
Obi said the loan was
targeted to the poor,
because, according to
him, government was
essentially to protect the
interests of all,
especially the poor and
the less privileged.
The elated bishop of
Mbamili thanked the
Governor for having the
interest of the people at
heart.
He said that the people of
the area were so happy
and assured of bumper
harvest from the area
next season.
He said the loan was for
all irrespective of
denomination, since the
partnership with the
church was for collective
welfare.
The Bishop, however, called on parents to do well
and send their children to school while engaging in
farming.
He said that the new school his Diocese was
building at Umikwu Anam would start in January and
that uniform would be free for the first 150 students
to register.
In his remarks, the member representing Anambra
West in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor
Okoye
thanked the Governor for being fair to all the parts
of the state.
He said unlike past leaders in the state took
everything to their home towns and local
governments, Obi had thought the people
that only equity and justice should guide the
distribution of resources.
