Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has thrown
his weight behind President Goodluck Jonathan for
the 2015 presidential election.
Chime made the declaration on Saturday at the
inauguration/swearing in ceremony of 17 local
government chairmen in the state at the Michael
Okpara Square, Enugu.
The Governor assured President Jonathan of the
support of the people of the state, stressing that
Enugu was a no-go-area for the All Progressives
Congress, APC.
“We pledge our total loyalty to President Goodluck
Ebele Jonathan, we support him and all his
programmes.
“As long as he continues in this business, we are
solidly behind him; he will not need to come to
Enugu State to campaign, if and when he declares to
contest in 2015.
“He should not border to come and campaign in
Enugu; APC will not come, so he should not border”,
the Governor assured.
Chime, who said he was not praying for somebody
like him as successor in 2015, noted that “my
prayer for Enugu State is to have a much better
person than myself.
“If you produce somebody like me as a successor,
we are not improving. I don’t want the next
Governor to be like me”.
He called on members of the National Assembly in
the area, who he jokingly referred to as “people in
diaspora”, to start coming home.
He said, “This is the time for our brothers in the
National Assembly to start coming home; interact
with our people at home, we are still one, we are
still one happy family.
“We will not allow any of
you to break away; you
have served us well; you
have benefited from the
system; so, we will work
together, whatever
problem at home, we
shall resolve it together”.
Governor Chime while
urging the 5 new council
chairmen to build on the
solid foundation already
laid by their
predecessors, called on
the 12 returning council
chairmen to consolidate
and improve on their
achievements in the first
tenure.
“You must learn to
borrow a leaf from your
predecessors; you must
learn to reach out to
stakeholders, you must
learn to run all inclusive
government, you must
embark on projects that
will benefit all, that is the
only way your successor
will complete your
projects”, he advised.
He said it is no mean feat
that for the first time in the history of Nigeria,
“council chairmen are being returned un-opposed,
it is not something one could achieve the barrel of
gun or through the money one has, if you want to
know come to Enugu State.
“You must dialogue with your people, you must
deliver on your promises, gone are the days when
politicians promise heaven and earth and in the end
they do nothing; it is not as such in Enugu State; in
Enugu State, we have very serious minded
politicians.
“In Enugu State, you must be a family member, you
must identify with the people, you must make the
people feel the impact of what you are doing”.
“For PDP as a party, we have perfected the act of
politics in Enugu State, we are working very hard to
perfect the act of governance”, he added.
In an acceptance speech on behalf of the 17 council
chairmen, the chairman of Enugu East Council Area,
Prince Cornelius Nnaji assured the Governor of their
total loyalty to him and on delivery of quality
projects.
