The Alumni Association of the University of Nigeria,
Nsukka, UNN, has called on the apex Igbo socio-
cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo to come and
rescue the institution.
The University has been enmeshed in crisis for the
past one month following the removal of its pro-
chancellor, Dr. Emeka Enejere.
This situation has led to protests from all the
workers’ union in the University as well as the host
communities.
The Alumni Association told Ohaneze Ndigbo on
Sunday in Enugu that if urgent measures were not
taken, the University would be grounded to a halt.
The Association, represented by its Deputy
President General told Ohaneze that “as schools
resume tomorrow, no academic work will resume at
the UNN because all the workers’ union, the ASUU,
the NASU, the NAAT, the Alumni, the host
communities are protesting.
“We have made our presentation at Abuja; we urge
you to please come and rescue UNN”.
In a response, Ohaneze President General, Enwo
Igariwey assured that the body would take
appropriate action after studying the issues.
Earlier, Ohanaeze set up a planning and strategy
committee regarding the proposed national
conference.
At the head of the committee is Prof. Anya O. Anya.
Ohaneze President, who announced this at the Ime
Obi meeting said the committee would on its own
co-opt other members.
Also put in place is Finance committee.
A colloquim towards the harmonisation of the Igbo
position would also hold between March 10 and 13
this year.
According to Igariwey,
the aim of the formation
of the committees was to
close ranks “so that we
speak with one voice
since that has been the
problem bedevilling us.”
The Ohanaeze president
who called for prayers
for a successful outing at
the confab regretted that
“some of our people do
not want the
conference.”
Such people, he said,
were opposed to the
creation of zones and
only wanted states.
First Republic politician,
Mbazulike Amaechi who
was appointed chairman
of the committee on
reparation complained
that since May 31, 2013
when the committee was
formed, the president
general has refused to
inaugurate the
committee.
Amaechi informed the
meeting that he spent
time and money in compilation and articulation of all
the “massacre of Ndigbo in the North from 1953 in
Kano to those of Asaba and recent ones”.
He asked for the reversing of the decision if the
president general is no longer interested in the
reparation demand from the Federal Government.
But the Ohanaeze president said the complaint
would be treated in the next meeting.
The Ime Obi discussed the knotty issue of Igbos
creating kingdoms for themselves outside Igboland
where some people abuse the nomenclature His
Royal Highness or Majesty to the embarrassment of
their hosts.
In attendance include Ben Obi, Chief Emmanuel
Iwuanyanwu, Prof. George Obiozor, Prof. Mark
Ordu, Prof. Anya O. Anya and Prof. Joe Irukwu.
Also in attendance were Chief Ralph Obioha, Col.
Patrick Anwuna (rtd), Col. Ben Gbulie (rtd), Prof.
